In San Jose, the best-known bakeries and bagel shops have lines on weekend mornings, so arrive early or order ahead where the shop offers it. Across California, immigrant bakeries add Mexican pan dulce, Vietnamese banh mi bread, Chinese buns, Middle Eastern sweets and European rye to the mix, and many gluten-free and vegan bakeries have opened in larger cities. Check the listing for hours, whether the shop accepts custom cake orders and its Google rating before you go, and call about allergens, since small kitchens often share equipment. Day-old bread and end-of-day discounts are common if you ask.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. Typical hours are 9 am–7 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (408) 270-2222. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, vansbakerysanjose.com.
Its Google rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 107 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.
San Jose is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around San Jose is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Great Vietnamese yogurt, some of the best Ive had in years. Almost tinted yellow color, super rich, light, and not too sweet. A lot of dried plum, fruit candies/snacks made in-house, reasonable prices. We come back around whenever we eat Nha Trang next door.

The green pandan waffle is the reason I keep coming back to Van's. If you're a pandan fan, the flavor is still unique and satisfying, with that sweet, slightly coconutty taste that's hard to find done well elsewhere. That said, the waffle isn't quite as good as I remember from years ago. The biggest issue is consistency. Sometimes it's perfectly golden brown with a great texture, and other times it feels a little undercooked. It's still one of the better pandan waffles in the Bay Area, just not the standout it once was. Parking in this plaza can be an adventure, and service can move at its own pace during busy hours.

Spoiled strawberry cake 4/3/2026 went into the bakery in the afternoon a woman helped me select my Cake by answering some questions. There was one really pretty cake with very fresh flowers when we brought it to the restaurant and cut into it and took a bite automatically you could taste that the berries were very old with a pungent smell and old taste, the white cake was on the dry side as well. The small cake was $45.00 they wanted to throw it away I brought a slice home to pull the berries out to show google reviewing . Customers, this was the white cake with strawberry whipped cream and old strawberries. There was very little strawberries as well in the cake, but I’m glad because they were very old. They were very squishy as well. It’s spoiled the whole cake! This bakery actually owes us a refund if they see this review. I highly recommend fresh cakes from Peter’s Bakery after this experience. Also will be our last, Safeway has better white cake in their bakery sad to say it’s the honest truth.

So many cake varieties! It all look great, but hard to tell what they are if you’re not Vietnamese. The smell of the bakery is very homey, especially fragrant when they making a pandan waffle. I think it’s quite a staple in the area for cakes. The mini macarons are esp good - guava and coffee are the best flavors imho. And you can get some Gong pastries here (his famous kake is available today!)

This place makes great Vietnamese cakes but the pandan waffles can use some better packaging. Paid $5 for two waffles and they tossed it in a plastic bag. It was soggy and wet from the condensation by the time I got to the car.
